Determine status of choking partially = coughing / wheezing / talking weakly encourage to continue to attempt to expel object completely = no talking / no coughing / high pitched noise tell them you know how to help and are going to do so perform Heimlich maneuver Heimlich maneuver Position yourself behind the victim Wrap your arms around the waist and locate the umbilicus Place your fist over the umbilicus with your thumb up Roll your fist upward so that the thumb is inward Begin separate thrusts (inward & upward simultaneously) each thrust is a separate attempt to dislodge the object Continue until the object is expelled of the victim becomes unconscious *** If you are alone and choking, you can use the back of a chair, the end of a table, etc., to attempt to dislodge the object (disclaimer: for conscious victims only)
