In addition
to the cities of Sarasota and Venice, Sarasota County also includes
the City of North Port, the Town of Longboat Key and the remaining
unincorporated areas. Moving northward from Venice there are three
small communities before Sarasota. Respectively, they are Nokomis,
Laurel and then Osprey. West of these is Casey Key.
East of Venice is North Port, a city that is seeing tremendous
growth. North Port has annexed much of the unincorporated area
between itself and Venice, including Warm Mineral Springs and the
land along Highway 41 that used to be Taylor Ranch.
Now dubbed "Thomas Ranch", this unencumbered 16,000 acres of land
recently sold to a developer for $78 Million. As North Port
contained about 200,000 platted lots prior to this annexation,
this new unencumbered land will allow for a tremendous amount of
flexible development.
The southern portion of Sarasota County includes the northern
part of Englewood, and within that, Manasota Key. Much of the
eastern part remains undeveloped and contains the Myakka River.
At the northern end of Sarasota County is the city that gives it its
name. Famous all over the world for Siesta Key and its white sand
beaches, Sarasota is known to many as a cultural oasis. Boasting
renowned art collections, theatres and an opera house, Sarasota
clearly knows how to deliver with class.
